extract parts

After making several attempts, I am at a complete loss on how to extract
parts on the attached file. I have followed this: "Choose File > Extract Parts. The Extract Parts
dialog box appears. Specify the instruments you want to extract by checking the desired parts (and/or the score)."
I cannot understand the "checking the desired parts" instruction. What am I missing here?? Can you please explain or clarify
how to proceed? See attached. Thanks.

It has been a long time since I extracted parts, preferring linked parts. But I believe before extracting you have to Manage Parts under Document; in other words, define the parts to be extracted.

I have followed this suggestion. All good until the last step. The #10 instruction says "Choose Document > Edit Part > Clarinet in Bb." I get the clar. part and save it as "clar." Good. Then, when I open the saved part, I get the score, not the part.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking about, how to create linked parts - right?

1) Document menu > Page Format > Parts…
Edit the settings so that they are, as you need them.
The settings in Page Format for Parts are the default settings for new systems/pages.

Already existing systems/pages in the linked parts will not be affected.
To update already existing systems/pages in a linked part, use the Page Layout Tool to Redefine Pages.
But this will not be a problem in your current Finale document - since the linked parts have not yet been generated.

2) When you have edited the default formatting for parts, it is time to generate the linked parts:
Document menu > Manage Parts…
If you click the button {Edit Part Definition…}, then the dialog box will expand, and display more options.
You can find info about the dialog box Manage Parts by making a search in the online manual.

The more modern way is Linked Parts which means that if a change is made in the score, it is also made in the part. My recommendation for you would be Linked Parts. Thanks. Now I understand what Linked Parts means. I'll continue to try things out
and will let you know if I'm stumped, which is likely.

I watched the vid (extract parts) and yes he does explain the difference between extract and linked parts. I see the difference. However he never shows exactly how to extract and save a part. I sent him my question and will see if he responds. Thanks.

On your piece

Go > Document > Manage Parts > Generate Parts

Now if you do Document > Edit Parts you will see all the linked parts.

The parts may require some tinkering, but they are there.

Yes, the Finale document is both the score and all the individual parts - all in one document.
This fact is a time saver.
You just open one document, and there you have it all.

To work on an individual part, go to
Document menu > Edit Part > …

While you are viewing the part, you can edit the part’s layout (like e. g. the number of measures in each system), and you can use the Graphics Tool to export the finished part as a PDF file.

It is seldom necessary to extract a part.

To add to Peter's explanation, once you have created linked parts you can use opt-cmd-period to quickly cycle through the parts.

opt-cmd-comma cycles backwards and opt-cmd-backslash jumps from the current part to the full score.
