Trying to put orchestral score page numbers - baffled! Getting the same number ("1") on all pages, and can't get L and R positioning. Have read the instructions several times. :-(

Text Tool > Double click where you want the number > then Text > Insert > Page Numbers

Then Text > Frame Attributes > drop-down menu to Left Pages

Rinse and Repeat for right pages.

The piece begins with page 1 upper Left.
I doubleclick text box, text insert page number - and “1” appears - but only on pg. 1.
At that point (to get R pages) I am unclear what "rinse and repeat" means.

When you have created the text block, exit the text block (= click outside the text block), to return to the page.
Now the text block is there, and there is a handle on the text block.

Drag-select the text block handle.

To get to the selected text block’s Frame Attributes:

Text menu > Frame Attributes… (or hit Shift-Command-T, or hit Shift-Return).

Use the pop up menu at the top of the dialog box Frame Attributes.

The pop up menu defaults to Single Page, but you probably need the menu item
All Pages

NB:
In the bottom of the Frame Attributes you can achieve different positioning on right and left pages.

I hope that this is clear?

If not, ask again.

Still no-go. I created the text block this way: I double-clicked the upper L space (see attached), then went up to the text menu, insert/ page number, and that puts in “1.” Then "frame attributes / ALL pages. Good so far. But still can't figure out your instruction for different positioning on right and left pages.

Open the frame attributes. In the bottom there is a possibility to check "use position for right pages" ... (I have a German version, hope my translation is correct... You will find it...)

Peter S. is right.

In the english version, at the bottom of the Frame Attributes, select
Use Right Page Positioning

I just tried it - it doesn't work. It places subsequent pages only in the middle. (I started by putting the text box bottom middle.)

That worked. Now I have to figure out how to hide the page number on page 1. Thanks.

This is done on top of the frame: do not use ALL pages but the option "from page x to page y", use 0 for y if you want it to the end...

On my mac, "page range" from 1 through 0. Ja. But that doesn't hide the "1."

In case it makes you feel any better, musicus,I used to have to painfully "figure out" page numbering in Finale every time I did it, which was fortunately infrequent, because page numbers were included in my main template. Way over-complicated and unclear.

Ditto here (plus why can't one have different page offsets in each part and in the score, as is, I believe, easy in both Sibelius and Dorico?).

Indeed, that does make me feel a bit better. As if Mozart or any great composer would present a new score to an orchestra and they would hesitate to consider it because of the page numbering. And yet the "guidelines" from different souces tell us these things. Take books, for example. I have yet to figure out the widespread convention of hiding page 1, or even pages 1 and 2. (Perhaps they might say that page 1 is obvious and that we don't need to see it printed. If that is the reason, then wouldn't page 2 also be obvious.) I dunno. :-)
