Hi I'm working on an orchestral score, and somehow Finale created a staff, numbered 16896 !!, that's hidden and I can move it up or down, but cannot show it, so I don't know how to get rid of it. Is there another way to delete a staff? or could somebody help me, taking a look to this file?

Thanks in advance
Felipe

If you clear everything from the score (ON A COPY) is it still to large to post here?

Hello Bill, it reduces ⅓ to 452 KB, still too large for uploading here...
I selected all with selection tool, then Edit->Clear all items, are there more things to clear?

If I try to show the staff it appears to be at the very bottom of the screen, out of the program window, with no zoom out capability.

In the empty copy, delete many measures.
P.S. : the size of the file looks pretty big for an empty file.

Yes...
Well, I kept just one measure, and also deleted all texts... Still 384 KB and cannot be uploaded.

I deleted all staves, and now 137 KB, which I'm attaching

Nothing there. We would need to be able to see the staves to figure out the problem. Try again?

This is a long shot, but maybe try Document > Data Check > File Maintenance and see if that reduces the file size enough to send.

I did Staff > Reorder Staves and moved the mystery staff to the top, and was able to delete it.

Here's the entire file, which fcopaja mailed to me. The file appears to be corrupted--when I switch to Scroll view, nothing appears except some stray notes if I scroll to the bottom. I tried moving the staff the top as Bill did; it shows as hidden but can't be deleted. I tried selecting all in the Staff tool and unhding everything, which results in empty systems in the Page Layout tool. If you select all and then try to switch to Scroll view, the program crashes. The negative staff number suggests that something overwrote something.

I exported to music XML, and when imported the mystery staff was renamed Staff 35 and could be deleted. That may be the only way to salvage things.

Here's the original file in case someone else wants to try:

Motet,

Possibly I was able to delete the staff after moving it to the top because both Felipe and I are on Mac. I will be curious to hear if it works for him.

Thanks for reminding me of the XML trick.

Well, I managed to move the staff just over the strings, then deleted it. I saved and closed Finale. Reopen the file and the staff was indeed erased. Then I tried showing all staves of a system, ok. Then, I wanted to split the systems into two in the utilities menu, Finale crashes again.

Exporting importing xml works, thanks a lot. Not everything is as it was though, font sizes and values for the staff size changed, even if they look the same on screen at the same zoom level... All plugins actions were reverted, as well as the default spacing. But I can resume...
Still I wonder what may have caused this situation, or what a messy s*** I have in my files; did a quick review on other files, and there are several around 500-1000 KB.
I saved the log of the crashing, in case anyone knows how to read it.

You could report it to MakeMusic, I suppose, but somehow I doubt anything would come of it.

You had many hidden items. Removing empty ones and running file militance ended up with a pretty normal Finale file. You have a big score so it is going to be a bigger file.

What's an example of an empty hidden item?
