On the attached page I'm trying to get some stability in
the positioning, meas.3, top layer. Whenever I drag the first note (G, dotted quarter) to the right, and the whole note G (lower layer) to the left so that the dot is visible, it reverts back to the appearance you can see here, and the dot is inside the whole note. I know how to drag. How do I keep the positioning stable so that we see the whole note and then, to the right, the dotted quarter? Thanks.

A solution would be to swap the layers. I used the JW Staff Polyphony plug-in -> Layers -> Swap (1 & 2) and got the result shown in the first image (except for the red tie). This places the whole note to the left of the dotted quarter and leaves the dot visible. Just flip the tie in Layer 2. Other solutions are possible flipping the stems if you want.
3 variations :

Sorry, I must be blind but I don't see JW as one of the plugins nor do I see it anywhere.

You have to download it here : http://www.finaletips.nu/index.php/down ... c-plug-ins
Unzip the file and place the jwstaffpolyphony64.bundle file in your plug-ins folder.
Finder : Go ► Computer
Then : "Your disk" ► Library ► Application Support ► MakeMusic ► Finale 26 ► Plug-ins (or create a subfolder in it)

P.S.: if you are not familiar with the JW plug-ins, check what is available and at least get JW Change, the most powerful one.

You don't need a JW plug-in to swap layers. Edit menu, Move/Copy layers.

It says this action will overwrite existing data. It winds up with only one layer.

Here's a notation I made regarding overlapping, which I'd like
to share: Prefs/edit/auto music spacing uncheck. It seems easier for me.
Thanks to all for the replies.
