Sust Ped playback problem - all or nothing!

I get NO Sus ped playback if I turn off Advanced-Auto Ped in Custom Human Playback.

I get ONLY Ped, no release of pedal! when I turn it on...

This is the same outcome whether I use Finale's builtin Steinway, or NP's piano.
This used to work in this file, and I've updated nothing!

How can this be fixed?
Please look at my video attempts to fix it. Am I doing something wrong?

[The problem is now revealed to be worse - Sus ped markings of any type will work fine. I can leave the document open, go for a long lunch and return to find none of the marks playback!
Worse yet - the opposite can happen! I leave a non-working file open at night, and in the morning it works!
ALso - I open the file to see it doesn't work. I add a new Smart Shape Sust Ped mark and now it DOES work. But if I remove it, the older Smart Shapes still do not play back...
