I am trying to play a big-band file, and Finale's reluctant to play it.

I followed the manual for playing the file. A "timer" appeared in the place of the cursor. After two minutes, I tried to terminate the program withint success, clicking on the "X." Then I finally clicked Ctl-Alt-Del (Control-Alt-Delete) and a window with the name of the file on the title bar appeared. I waited and waited. Finally, I clicked on an "open space" in the window. The "close-program window" closed, and my Finale file appeared on the computer screen.

Finale says to click the spacebar and click in the staff at the point at which you want to start playing. Are there are other "protocols" I should follow in order to get finale to play my file?

Have you tried the "playback controls" window (window menu) ?

I tried the playback controls, clicking on the play button (>). A green bar progresses without sound, from measure to measure, in the Finale score.

The next thing to do is to try the various oiptions located under "Internal speaker playback" (Midi Menu). First make sure it's not off.
Then in the midi menu, see what's in the midi set-up...
Are you on a PC or a Mac ?
