Luftpause

According to the Finale user guide, there's supposed to be a way to articulate a luftpause under the Document menu. I don't see. I know how to add one with the Articulation tool but that's attached to a note (it looks like a comma). That's not what I want. What I want looks like to small slash lines at the top of a bar line.

Document menu, no, but in articulations, it's #35 in Finale 2011 Windows.

If you don't have a note to attach the "railroad tracks" (= Cesura) to, create an expression with the "Cesura" symbol (it's character #34 in the Maestro font - just type the "Inches" symbol).

You can add a fermata above the cesura in the same way.

I knew there was a word for it. But how do I get to actuallky sound? The symbol is now there and I don't want the value of the note before it to change. But I need a pause between the measures.

If you don't want the note duration to change, you could enter a hidden slower tempo change in the last beat of the measure, and revert to the original tempo with a second tempo change.
PS : don't use a Tempo Mark, they can't be moved inside the measure and are placed at the beginning of the measure. Use a text expression with playback effect->Type->tempo. Those can be moved inside the measure holding down the opt(alt) key (on the Mac).

Well, I think I came up with a solution. It's not elegant but it works in the Samson et Dalila aria in question. Rather than a caesura, which shortens the preceding note, I put a fermata over that note. It slows down the few notes before it, almost like a rallentando and then adds a real sense of tension.
