I'm using Finale 2010 and I have some repeated sections that have instruments playing the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th times only. How can I get these instruments to tacet the first few times?

In this example let's say that the section is played only 2 times, and that you want the instrument to play on the 2nd pass only.

Create an expression for 1st time through, something like: "Tacet 1. x"
In the Playback chiclet, set Controller 11 to zero, and set the text's font style to "Hidden".

Fill in the correct number in the "Play Only on Pass..." input box.
You'll will see this option under the Playback chiclet when you are creating your expression.

For 2. x, create an expression like, "Play 2. x only."
Don't hide this text, and set the playback to Controller 11 = 127.

Some of this isn't making sense. I set it to "play only on pass 2" and it plays the first time but not the second. I need it the other way around. I eventually will need other parts entering on the 3rd time only.

Without having the actual Finale .mus document it can be difficult to pinpoint the culprit.

Could you perhaps attach a small .mus sample document that shows the problem?
You must compress the file (e. g. as a .ZIP file), and the file size must be less than 100 KB.

Just in case : "Play on pass 1" actually means apply the entered value on pass 1. If it is zero, it will mean tacet (not play) during that pass.

I want the piano to tacet 1st time. There are other instruments that I'll want to have play only the 3rd and 4th time.

Your file does not produce the desired effect. I corrected it. Take a look at the playback instructions of the 2 expressions (you also can use the "hidden" style for the first one, if you want). It works, the piano is silent the 1st x.

Thanks for taking a look at it but unfortunately I'm using Finale 2010. It says that it was unable to open because the file was saved in a later version.

Thank for sending that! I see that you used "key velocity" instead of controller. Which command is making it silent the first time, "tacet 1st x" or "play from 2nd x"? Also in "play from 2nd x" is see that you set effect value to 64. Why is that? Also, if I want to have the piano enter on the 3rd time only, which values would I need to input?

- you also can use controller->volume, it works, too.
- "tacet 1st x" makes the piano silent the first time. Because it imposes a velocity of zero on pass 1, thus tacet on pass 1
- "play 2nd x" reopens the velocity, to a medium value of 64, on pass 2 (127 is the max if I remember correctly)
- for the piano to enter the 3rd time, simply change the text to "Play from 3rd x" and in the Playback window, Play from Pass 3 (instead of 2).
See attached file.
