NotePerformer Ignoring Slurs During Mid-score Playback

Post by DerekWesleyArnold » Fri Sep 17, 2021 2:07 pm

I'm using NotePerformer for Finale playback. It's lovely (no issues) when playing back using the "Play" button from the top of the score, but when I attempt the "spacebar click" playback mid-score NotePerformer ignores slurs and dynamic markings. I've been in touch with Wallander tech support and they asked me to make sure of the following:
1. NotePerformer is at the top of the Sound Map Priority list.
2. Under Documents > Playback/Record Options, "Chase from First Measure" is selected next to "Dynamics and markings."
3. Human Playback is set to Standard.
4. I performed the Reassign Playback Sounds operation.
All of these have been observed properly, but mid-playback continues to ignore slurs and dynamic markings. Any possible solutions?

as far as I know, spacebar+clicking does not invoke HumanPlayback. it's a dry playback, with no interpretation effects.

If you set playback to be "starting at the leftmost bar", then you can simply play from wherever with the playback transport.

spacebar+click is why NotePerformer is ignoring your slurs. The playback is not invoking the HumanPlayback plugin, so the midi triggers (keyswitches) for slurs and other effects are not being activated.

Michel is correct. It's a legacy of the days when loading HP could take a noticeable amount of time, so this was a way to avoid that.

This is fantastic information! Thank you so much. And "Leftmost bar" definitely delivers the microscope I was looking for. Hopefully, Finale will one day offer a more modern selective playback option. I'm sure it was a time saver in the past, but it was frustrating today.
Thanks again!

I don't know, I never use the playback buttons.
I've just redefined a keyboard shortcut to "start playback = Alt+P" and "stop playback = Alt+S".

It's become such a habit for me that I keep forgetting that I can spacebar click also.

Michel, does stopping and starting that way include HP?

Sorry Mike, I hadn't noticed your question.

I have not had too many problems with stopping and starting playback from anywhere in a score.
Although I have to admit that every once in a while a file will have difficulty scanning back to see whether the contrabass should be arco or pizz. That type of keyswitching error seems to be the only real problem I've come across.

by the way I only use HP playback. especially since they sped it up and it no longer takes a minute to load up all the information like in the old days.

Just out of curiosity, have you found any workarounds for the arco/pizz problem? I've dealt with this for years, small and large scores, and even slapping the arco expression directly on the leftmost measure and starting playback it gets ignored for an earlier pizz. trigger. I'm at a point where, when it's time to do mockups, I make a separate file and give every string part two staves, one for arco and one for pizz, and separate all the material out.

Re: arco/pizz problem? with NotePerformer.

I've had this problem but eliminated it completely by checking that:
1) arco/pizz are always applied to the same layer - I've not tested but the layers may be independent.
2) arco/pizz are always applied directly to sounding notes, or complete empty bars. An arco/ pizz applied to a rest is ignored.

Having said this I never trust it completely and always use the mixer 'solo' to listen to all individual parts. Doing that has also found me many "silent" notes - that is notes ignored on playback. This afflicts my orchestral score because it is transcribed from a solo guitar composition and my original solo composition was very heavily re-worked.

On the advice of the NP folks I've set my music font to Maestro (Not SMuFL). The NP folks explained to me that something goes astray with NP and SMuFL.

The results with NP are excellent (there is a link in my signature to my site)
