Finale Won't Playback
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I am not sure what I did, but mid-session my finale just will NOT playback. The green playback line will appear, however it will not move. Finale does not freeze, I can stop playback, however it just will not start. I have tried messing with the playback options: MIDI/VST, audio out. Tried restarting my computer. I just cannot figure it out. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
That's a typical behaviour if Finale is set to external synchronization and thus waits to receive sync messages. Check this window: https://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/Fin ... E_SYNC.htm .
"Receive sync" must be set to "internal sync"

Thanks for the suggestion, however that did not work. Mine is already set to internal sync. Just to be clear - I get no sounds/playback at all! Not sure what to do.HaraldS wrote: ↑Sun Oct 25, 2020 8:59 amThat's a typical behaviour if Finale is set to external synchronization and thus waits to receive sync messages. There are several sub-settings under MIDI/AUDIO that have caused me some trouble when I get new hardware (though the hardware is ostensibly compatible.) Under MIDI/AUDIO is Device Setup and under that is Audio Setup. My newest computer knows which type of headphone I have plugged in (BOSE earphone or KLIPSHORN speakers or the computer output, etc.). Sometimes when I switch from headphones to speakers (same audio plug), I'll get no sound. I either have to set the correct output or sometimes wait for Finale to change things itself.
Still having the same issue... Thank you to all who have replied. To clarify further, the green bar appears at the start of the piece, but doesn't move! It stays at the start without playing a single note. I also do not get any sound when I input new notes as I used to. Finale appears to be working otherwise; just no sound, and playback does not even start despite appearing to load and the green playback bar appearing! I greatly appreciate any advice, I want to get back to writing!!
No. Reinstalling does not use up an authorization, as long as it’s on the same computer.
Finale doesn’t use keys, as such. You have authorization to run Finale on two computers. You can have it installed on as many as you like, but only two can be authorized. You can deauthorize and authorize in your Finale account.

In my Finale Audio setup, I use Direct Sound. In My Windows 10 Audio setup, I choose a sample rate of 44,100. Unless I do this Finale doesn't want to cooperate. Also, occasional I get the same behavior as you do. In Windows 7 I didn't have that, usually. Selecting reload MIDI driver used to fix that. Now, only saving my work, closing Finale, and relaunching Finale gets it going. In Windows 7, sometimes the only solution was a system reboot. I haven't had to do that in windows 10.

MakeMusic claims Finale can work with other sample rates. However, if you import an mp3 to do a "take down", then, as many mp3s are sampled at 44,100, you then need to have Windows set to that. Finale locks into the Windows setting.

I just upgraded to a new laptop and I was having several issues with sound until I did this(Computer issue, not Finale):mafoxa wrote: ↑Sat Oct 24, 2020 5:30 amI am not sure what I did, but mid-session my finale just will NOT playback. Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Sound --> Speakers --> Properties --> Advanced tab --> Under Exclusive mode uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"
For some reason, this was causing issues with Finale, and just about any other application that required sound. Finale was locking up every time I tried to play something; eventually the driver wouldn't load and I just had to quit Finale. Then my sound wouldn't work elsewhere. Works great now.
Hope this helps... good luck.

I have tried every single thing suggested in this thread. Nothing works. Will not scroll. Will not playback. Will not make sound. I installed and uninstalled and installed and uninstalled and installed. Then I upgraded from v. 25 to v. 27. Same exact problem -- "Finale's audio engine failed to load." Installed and uninstalled and installed -- same program. Consulted every page on the web. Watched every YouTube video. Nothing works. Aaaaaaaaaaand, Finale no longer offers live help, phone or chat -- which I learned AFTER paying $100 to upgrade. I started a support ticket -- no response.
I had this issue. I messed with these settings and it worked for me. I hope it works for you. Try this:
Midi/Audio -> Device Setup -> Audio Setup -> under Audio Driver, select an option...make sure the Enabled box is not marked.
Press OK at the bottom.
I hope it worked!
