Can anyone figure out why all notes entered on the staves from Flute to Timpani sound like a piano? A friend sent it to me, and I can't figure it out.
Percussion to Contrabass are OK.

It's OK on my system, so not a Finale problem. Maybe a VST player issue. Notice the offenders are all in bank 1. Also, there are settings for what you hear when you enter (as opposed to playing back).

I'll try that.
In any case, I set it to MIDI, rather than Audio Units, and it's playing correctly, so I think we'll go with that, for now.
Thanks for the help!

FWIW I'm getting exactly the same phenomenon with this file as Mike.
To double check, I started a new file with SoftSynth Piccolo through Audio Units and the new file sounded OK. I also noted that with Mike's file, if the instruments are changed from SoftSynth to Garritan (MIDI/Audio>Reassign Playback Sounds), it sounds as it should through Audio Units. (This is for playback, rather than entry.)

The basic issue with this file is quite simple. There is a playback option which is unchecked which needs to be checked: Send patches to MIDI device on playback.

That simple! (once one has been told what to look for).zuill wrote:The basic issue with this file is quite simple. There is a playback option which is unchecked which needs to be checked: Send patches to MIDI device on playback.
I wonder why it was unticked, as the default for a new file seems to be to have it ticked.

By simple I didn't mean easy to track down. I meant it was one single item. Sometimes just one option checked or unchecked can cause undesired or mysterious behavior. It took me awhile to find it. I was only able to even go in that direction because I had seen this before. However, it didn't come to me right away.
