I'm writing a piece and have added 'rit.' and 'a Tempo'. After the rit the tempo slows
down but after the a Tempo the tempo continues to slow down instead of going back
to the original tempo.

This isn't happening, to my knowledge, with other pieces. Any ideas?

It's hard to predict the spurious behavior of HP. I would enter a hidden tempo mark to return the tempo to what it was.

"a tempo" should have a lowercase T. Perhaps that's it.
