Can we silence a single note in playback?

In the third measure of the attached file, I have written a golpe (flamenco guitar percussive tap) on the first beat and assigned a wood block sound to the note in layer 4. Because I want the stem of the next note to connect with the golpe, I superimposed a guitar note over it, which I wish to silence.

Holding down the Shift key and clicking in the measure to select only the first note fails because it is the first note in the measure (I wanted to change the instrument to wood block for that note also).

Am I asking too much of Finale, or is there a way to achieve what I am attempting to do?

I would use the Speedy Entry Tool’s (very technical) dialog box Edit Frame to de-select Playback for that single note:

(Speedy Entry Tool)

Click outside the staff, to exit the Speedy Entry rectangle.

Hold down Alt, and click in the measure/staff.

If you have the JW Change plug-in, it can do this perhaps more easily that finding the note with Edit Frame. Select the note you want muted and run the plug-in as follows:

With JW Change, make sure you only mute the note that is not needed. If there is a note in another layer that is doing the wood block, then choose the layer in the proper slot that is for the note needing muting.

Thank you both. My work would be sorely diluted without this forum.

I spoke to soon. Peter's method does not work for me. I selected the following:

Duration: 512
Note ID:
Displacement -1.

Then I unchecked Playback in both panels.

And I cannot use the JW Change plug-in because Finale does not allow selection of the first note in a measure (first beat of third measure in the attached file). Is there anything else I can try?

Either method works for me. As far as Peter's method, be sure you're in the correct Layer.

Perhaps I am missing a step you folks assume is too obvious to state. Can you share all the steps you used?

I managed to mute the note as follows, which is laborious:

1. I wrote the note I wanted to mute on the first beat in the measure then I wrote the note again on the second beat.
2. Selection tool -> hold down "Shift" key -> click in the measure.
3. Click repeatedly from right end of the measure, until only the first two notes are highlighted.
4. Plug-ins (upper toolbar) -> Favorites -> JW Change -> expand "Note Entries."
5. Select "Playback" -> Mute -> OK -> Apply -> Close.
6. I then delete the duplicated note.

These steps work, but I am eager to know how you succeeded, without all the labor.

With Peter's method, I used the Speedy Edit frame and unchecked Playback. With JW Change, I drag-highlighted the first 8th note and muted it. Simple steps. I can't say why these methods don't work for you.

Did you download my file? I also got the woodblock sound on the Layer 4 note, which you hadn't done. Was that what you were wanting to do?

Click/hold and drag around the note, to select the region. Apply the plug-in (where you can choose layer, duration, and note entry to further isolate the note you want to mute.)

Works for me, and takes a lot less time than typing this, did.

I closed Finale, rebooted Windows then opened the document again. Now Peter's method works for me. And I can duplicate what Zuill did in his revised document, adding a wood block sound to the percussive note as I wanted. Finale must have had a hiccup.

The suggestion to
miker wrote:Click/hold and drag around the note, to select the region
is not possible for me, and I cannot "drag" the highlighting; so the JW Change plug-in cannot be applied. With the the Selection tool, I can highlight all the notes in the measure and, holding down the "Shift" key and start clicking horizontally from the right, I can highlight any note in the measure except the first.

So how did you manage to highlight only the first note?

You click and hold above the staff (to the left of the note) then drag down below the staff and to the right to select that 8th note. I've done it this way for years with nary a problem.

Got it!

I was used to holding down the "Shift" key as in MS-Word and other apps with graphic editing capabilities. Without the "Shift" key, I was able to apply the plug-in.

Thank you all for your patience.

Useful in many ways in Finale.
