Audio Export doesn’t reflect playback at a particular time

This has been raised in the past but I haven’t seen any definitive responses. I’m using Windows 8.1, Finale 26, VST, playing back via Vienna Ensemble with VSL instrument plugins.

I have a file of about 55 measures, 23 total channels across two banks. When I play back the file from the beginning or anywhere else it sounds fine – but when I’ve exported it as audio at measure 40 the volume on a few instruments unaccountably drops down for a measure or two.

I’ve tested every possible variation, increased the device buffer, and changed audio devices from onboard windows to outboard asio, even cleared midi data for the area. I’ve also tried a previous suggestion to simultaneously record the playback with Audacity – but the recorded file exhibits the same volume dip. The same result if simultaneously recording using the outboard asio device. There isn’t a high CPU usage while doing any of this, so I don’t think it’s a CPU resource issue.

Oddly, the music will export correctly if I start the playback region later in the file, so as a workaround I exported the audio separately for the first and second halves and then combined them in my audio editor. Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions? Will it do any good to report it to MakeMusic?

The most puzzling part of your description is the Audacity recording. When a score is played in real time and sounds correct in real time, Audacity will sound the same. So to report that doing that into Audacity gives the same erroneous result doesn't make sense.Maybe you can elaborate as to the steps taken when recording into Audacity.

I erred when thinking that the file plays correctly when started from the beginning. The dropout does occur when I play from the beginning. If I play/record or export halfway through or just the affected measures it plays/exports/records okay. I'm now wondering if this is some type of issue where the playback either is or isn't chasing from the first measure, even though I have the playback set to chase. Also, I've discovered that some of VSL's HP key switches are bad, triggering wrong instruments, so I'll check on that. I don't want to take up any more of anyone's time on this, but I'll post if I find a solution.

If you're saying that playback has the problem, then don't worry about audio export yet. Maybe try clearing MIDI data with "clear selected items." Or look for dynamics that may be attached to the wrong measure. Something's causing it.
