Hi everyone. Can someone please tell me why my swing eighths are not playing back correctly in the attached file, m.96-end? I've done all I know to do at this point. Thanks!

BTW- I am using Finale 2014.5 on a Mac

Try setting Human Playback Style to Jazz.

That makes the entire file play back swing eighths. I just want a section to play back swing eighths :)

OK, sorry. I'm out of my element when it comes to playback.

superlocrian,

The following trick works for me:

Open your attached Finale document.
Document menu > Category Designer…

In the Category Designer, select the category Tempo Mark.
Next to the sub-menu Score List, click Edit…

In the Score List window, in the Parts column, check all staves.

Thanks so much Peter! That worked for the file I had attached earlier. For whatever reason though, it is not working on the file I am attaching here. Any ideas?

Odd that the Method used (selecting all the staves) didn't work. This well known workaround was discovered by me years ago and seems to always work. I guess I was wrong. So, another workaround is needed. See attached file, which uses hidden expressions to get things swinging.

Thanks so much Zuill! You rock. Can you please explain to me how you created that hidden expression? I am unable to duplicate what you did. (I am choosing the expression tool, selecting "create new tempo mark" or "create new miscellaneous expression" and setting the playback to swing 100 and checking the "hidden" box in the shape designer section. This is not working for me. You created a hidden expression that has a headphone looking icon and it works but when I look to edit it I don't see what you did to make it work.

Any help is greatly appreciated, especially since I need to create a new one at the end of that section to get rid of the swing eighth notes :)

Thanks!!

I created the expression in the Misc. category. I didn't enter any text, so that is basically how it is "hidden". I set the swing playback to 100. I assigned it to all staves. All you should see in the score is the handle (small box). I don't know what you mean by a Headphone looking icon.

Go into the Misc. category and you'll see my expression. Duplicate it and then change the swing playback to 0 (zero). Then assign it to all staves in the spot where straight playback is needed.

Thanks Zuill. I was doing that and it wasn't working. I had set the playback to all staves in the Category Designer several days ago, but for whatever reason (still unknown) this did not make the swing eighth note expression work.

After adding my own hidden expressions, they were not working either. I finally figured out how to make it work. On a Mac, I command-clicked the handle after I had assigned the hidden expression and then selected "assign to staves" and selected all the staves. This worked!

So everything is playing back properly now. Evidently I just had to REassign the "apply to all staves" after creating new expressions.

Thanks so much for your help!
