Apologies if this is covered but I can't find any reference …

For many years I've had an issue whereby scrubbing across a barline in a score will play shots of an instrument in particular stave, even with no notes in sight. My current score plays a note in the timp part when I scrub across certain barlines — there are no notes present. What I do notice is that this only seems to happen at the point of a time-signature change. Otherwise this scrubbing works perfectly normally.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated as it's very frustrating!

I've noticed that. I think it's playing the very first bar. It's been the case for a very long time, so I suspect you'll just have to live with it.

I appreciate the assurance that this is not just me. However, it's clearly a bug which should have been fixed years ago. I actually find it quite disturbing in some situations. I'll drop them a line.

I have reported this to MM Support a while ago. Like motet, I have noticed that what you hear is the first note of the piece.

That's good to know. I just did the same just now so will report when I hear back from them.
