I have a composition that works at 80 beats per minute and about in the middle it changes to 120 beats per minute. I tried to copy it to another set of staves under a new name and found that I could mark the place above the staves with 120 BPM but I forgot how I got the music to change tempo at that measure.

I searched the menus for a long time but I haven't had any luck.

What is the secret?

Thank you for your help.

there's no "secret".
you make a text expression with the desired tempo marking, then give it the correct tempo to play in the "playback" tab of the expression definition dialogue.

it's all there in the help file under "Tempo".

On the playback tab in the tempo mark definition you can check "match playback to metronome marking text" and it should play back whatever your expression says. It might be best to start with one of the pre-loaded expresssions like Adagio q=40 and edit that to want you want.

I don't know why Finale's pre-defined tempo markings don't already use "match playback to metronome marking text".

I Think I

know what the playback tab is but I'm not sure what to do with it.

I think that the picture shows the open tab over the part of the score that has the tempo mark.

No, your screen shot shows the Playback Controls window.

What motet is talking about, is a chiclet in the Expression Designer:

ExpressionDesigner.jpg

Three things control the tempo in Finale:

MIDI Tool (= the recorded tempo changes)
Expression Tool (= the expression tempo changes)
Playback Controls

And they work in a hierarchical fashion.

The tempo in the Playback Controls is overridden by an Expression that sets a tempo.
This is overridden by the MIDI Tool, which is at the top of the “Tempo Hierarchy”.

Pete,

Thank you for this message.

I understand now the three things that control the tempo and their order.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the recorded tempo changes in the MIDI menu or the Expression Tool window anywhere. Please point to these items for me.

Thank you for your help.

Perhaps there are not any MIDI Data Tempo Changes in the document?

If you need to remove all MIDI Data Tempo Changes (which I suspect), then clear them:

Selection Tool.
Select All.
Edit menu > Clear Selected Items…
In the window Clear Selected Items, de-select everything except MIDI Data Tempo Changes.

… or the Expression Tool window …
To find it:

Expression Tool.
Double-click on the staff where you need a Tempo Mark.
The window {Expression Selection} appears.
In the left-most column, click the Tempo Mark category.
(single-)Click on a Tempo Mark expression to select it.
Click the button {Edit…}.

You get to the Expression Designer.
At the top of the Expression Designer there are three chiclets:
Main, Playback and Positioning

Peter,

I have selected the selection tool under the Tools menu at the top of the page.

At this point, I don't see how to Select All.

How to Select All:

Either
Edit menu > Select All
or the keyboard shortcut
⌘A

In my opinion it's unlikely that MIDI data is the issue. Fix the expression as I suggested, and only worry about MIDI data if it still doesn't play back correctly.
