Playback tempo super slow/ one bar inexplicably soft

I use playback all the time, and often I'll set the playback to start at this or that section.....usually works fine. But lately it will often slow wayyyyyyyyy down, whether I'm using the regular playback control, or just using space bar to play something back. I understand the quickie/space bar playback has limitations; it ignores tempo changes or anything with the expression function.....but even when I'm just using standard playback, often I'm getting reaaaalllly slllloooowwww playback and I can't find any setting to adjust it. I have to save the document, close it, and open it again to reset. Can someone let me know what I'm doing wrong here?

Also: I have a mystery bar where all of a sudden it plays back super soft. That bar alone; nothing else. I have no clue....I've checked settings, this, that.....no idea why it's so soft.

"Soft bar" issue: I tried, but the problem will not reproduce when copied/pasted to another document. That in itself hopefully gives a clue.......?

Slow playback issue: this happens on every single document I use playback on.....again, not all the time, but frequently. There's got to be some setting or something I can adjust, even if I have to do it every time this occurs. (I hope......)

fwiw: I've retrieved older versions of the document, and this bar plays fine. I tried copy/pasting the bar(s) from earlier versions to the current document, and the bar goes soft every time. So obviously it's a setting somewhere....

ASIO or Direct Sound? What sample rate? What Buffer Size?

I already responded to this......I have no idea why my response is no longer there. In any case: It's "Direct Sound".......sample rate: 48,000 ("controlled by Windows")...... Buffer size = 1024

I of course have no clue what any of that means.
