When I play a file from the beginning, the playback observes all of the tempo alterations that I have placed.

When I play FROM a point within a piece by SPACE+Click in a measure, the playback does NOT observe tempo alterations.

That means, if I want to listen to the effect of a ritardando, I must play the song FROM THE BEGINNING of the piece, which takes a long time, particularly if tempo changes are toward the end of a piece.

If there a setting whereby the ad hoc playback will observe tempo alterations?

Not so! Start and stop playback with the real stop/start controls. Spacebar/click bypasses HP by design.

there is an option in the playback settings to choose "playback from leftmost measure".
you don't HAVE to play back from the beginning every single time.

I used to use Finale on a PC. Recently I switched to an iMac. On a PC I could put my cursor in a measure and use the spacebar to playback from that measure. I can't make that work on the Mac. Is there a way to get this feature? It's very handy and I really miss it.

The Playback Controls window should be closed. The manual :
