I am somewhat new to Finale. During writing a piece I inserted breath marks for the purpose of indicating to the conductor (and player) that the phrasing should break at this point. Human Playback inserted (as I understand it) a short pause as though the player is taking a breath.

After several months of writing and re-writing I noticed these "pauses" were getting longer to the point that they are annoying to listen to. To my understanding, over time they grew in effect without me changing their definition.

I have tried to get rid of them and their tempo delay but with not much success. What is even more interesting, is that 2 measures later another set of breath marks seems to behave as you might expect, little delay and a stable performance.

Here's what I've tried, I am looking for a hidden Finale process that would cancel the breath mark effect:

1. Deleted all of them, no change in the pause
2. Re-wrote the measure after deleting all of the notes, no change
3. Re-defined the breath mark in the library to "no effect", also tried various percentages under the Playback options, Change Tempo 10-100% with no discernible effect changes.

So my questions are:

1. Does it matter if I connect the breath mark to a note vs a rest in the measure?
2. How do you change the breath mark delay? or set it to zero? Can you reset the measure tempo?
3. If you have used the Articulation #36, breath mark, how to you remove its tempo if deleting it does not?
4. To avoid HP effects, I am now using the Text comma character, but this has not erased my "past sins" of using the breath mark.

Thanks,

Just to be clear: are you talking about breath commas, or caesuras (railroad tracks)?

Try clearing the MIDI data.

I was referring to breath commas. But I am finding caesuras don't behave predictably either.
