Hello Finale experts,

No matter what I try, I cannot get a file to play back in my desired tempo - even creating a New document doesn't help. I have tried everything that I know how to do. I wish I had never "upgraded" from 2011......

I am only familiar with the basics of Finale, so my apologies in advance for possibly needing to be led by the hand. Hopefully it's just a buried box needing to be checked or unchecked. I miss the days when I could call for technical support.....

Thanks so much.

We all miss those days...

How are you setting your tempo? How are you stopping and starting playback? What is your Human Playback setting?

1. Tried with both the Playback Setting and the Tempo Adjustment tool
2. Start with both the Play button and Shift/click - no difference in result
3. Human Playback = none

If you could post a sample file here that we might examine, we might be able to find a solution.

Also, when you open a 2011 file in 2014.5, does it play back at the correct tempo?

Yes, older files play tempos correctly.

Thanks for the quick responses!

This file has MIDI Tempo Data saved in it. If you clear the Tempo Data, then the tempo set in Playback Controls should work properly.

P.S.: I cleared the MIDI Tempo Data and resaved the file. See if this works.

It worked!

I can adjust tempos with the Tempo Tool (not by putting number in the box) but that's great!

Thank you so much!!

Really appreciate your quick and gracious responses.

First, I removed the Tempo Data in the file I attached to my last post. If that file does what you want, then removing the Tempo Data is what you need.

If you want to see the Tempo Data, use the MIDI Tool. In the MIDI Tool drop-down menu, choose Edit Tempo. Double click the score and you'll see the Tempo Data (various lines, mostly). Select the whole score (ctrl-A). Everything is now highlighted in Blue. In the MIDI Menu, click the word Clear. That should get rid of it. If you now double-click on the score, all the lines should be gone. Now the tempo you set in Playback Controls should work.

Given the solution, I'm mystified why a new document would have the problem. Did the MIDI data get copied into the new document? Since you don't have a keyboard, where did the MIDI data come from?

Possibly a template that was created from an existing document with the MIDI Data?

Zuill is correct.

After 2014 came out, someone in the barbershop arranging community posted a helpful list of templates with our customary instrument settings already in place.

The weird thing is that the other arrangements I've done since then haven't had the playback issue. I have, however, recently copied and pasted snippets of others' arrangements for analysis....maybe this overrided my settings?

Yes, that could have done it.
