exported .wav files stop suddenly and complain

My usual practice is to export .wav files to the desktop sometimes to hear things. I'll convert them to .mp3's if I need to send them in an email or something. But lately when I try to play the .wav files on the desktop, they just stop, and I get the message "Can't Play-- either the file moved or another app is using it. Try playing form hits current location, or quit the other app." I assume the other app is Finale? Weird, never had this issue before.
