When transcribing from an audio file into Finale, I need to play the audio with an external program, Windows Media Player, Audacity, Cakewalk, etc. But if Finale is open it takes over the sound drivers and those programs complain and won't play. How do I tell Finale to not touch sound capability at all?

You're probably using ASIO for a sound driver. You can switch to DirectSound or WASAPI, or get FlexASIO, which doesn't monopolize the sound.

I've tried WASAPI, MME, and Direct Sound in the playback programs. None will work if Finale is open. I don't have an ASIO driver, wish I did.

I also tried setting Finale to use a different driver (WASAPI or Direct Sound) than the playback program (e.g. Audacity). No go.

Sorry that didn't work. I have an older version, so maybe this is a new problem. You might contact MakeMusic.

Can you select a different Dac/Output Device under "Device Set-Up/Audio-Midi" ?
That would divert Finale.
