Playback of dynamics and hairpins lost

I often clear the MIDI data that usually resolves the myriad of problems I experience after editing a score. Does clearing the MIDI data disable playback of dynamics and hairpins?
Is there a way to restore playback of crescendos, mf, pp, etc? I have tried switching genres in the HP settings, preferring Custom because if "Automatic expression" is checked, Finale erroneously plays accented notes softly.
