This seems a long shot, but here goes:

I have a vocal score which incorporates hand claps. I've notated them on the same staff, just interspersed with the melody, using different noteheads (X's) -- but of course finale plays them back as regular pitches. Is there any way to assign a different instrument to a specific notehead? (Not staff line, as all the lines are at some point used to indicate pitch for the singers.)

Fingers crossed! Grateful for any suggestions.

I do it by assigning the hand claps to a different layer, or, having a separate staff with hand claps only.

Thanks, Miker! I'd like to keep everything on one staff if I can, as that makes things easier for singers -- and also infuses the energy of the clap into the singing -- so I'll look into layers. I haven't used those before, or at least not in many years.... are they like invisible staffs behind the existing one? Or is it formally the same staff, with each layer assigned to a different instrument?

Each staff has 4 layers (a button at the bottom left is one way yo switch between layers). In the Scoremanager, you have access to these layers (via the triangle) and each of them can have its own midi channel and sound.

You can put them above the staff, if you want, and hide ledger lines and/or rests.

Thanks, Motet! I did think about that, but decided I was happy with how it looks on the staff -- it's just an issue of the playback now. I'll experiment with layers (thank you Miker!) and see if I can make it work. Always learning something new.
