I edited a document beyond what Finale supports, after which the drum track began to play back with a piano sound (see attached).
The following attempts to fix the issue fail: closing Finale and reopening the document; deleting the MIDI Data; reassigning the playback sounds; changing the Device from SmartMusic to Garritan; changing the instrument in Utilities to Brush Drum Kit (playback of the notation becomes erratic); deleting the instrument, creating a fresh track then copying and pasting it back in from a backup copy of the document; and exporting the document as an XML to clear the formatting then pasting it in a fresh drum track. The latter is not an option; since in doing so, Finale scatters and distorts the notation so much that I may as well rewrite the score. I'm ready to cry!
Anything else I can try?

oldmkvi, in score manager, he had the the percussion set to solo. (See the green dot?)
I set the percussion to Channel 10, playback through MIDI. It works. (No Garritan installed.)

Thanks for the help.
On my system, Garritan is installed:
Assigning the drum set track to channel 10 and setting Finale to playback through MIDI restored the correct sound; but in doing so, the Hi-Hat in the drum track now plays back erratically (q.v.). Can that be corrected?

I always understood a MIDI note in parentheses to be a duplicate sound: "Hi-Hat Open" is #46 and "Foot Splash" is (46). They sound identical. But I may be mistaken about the parentheses.
In the attached document, the Foot Splash plays back correctly on my system. The rhythmic pattern of the Hi-Hat in the 2nd and 3rd measures should be identical to that of the cross stick in the first measure (one-party-two-party). On my system, the Hi-Hat in the 2nd and 3rd measures sounds like randomly timed morse code. The latter is what I need to correct. Can you help?

I did clear the MIDI data, more than once. But with some luck, I managed to solve the problem as follows.
1. Score Manager -> select the drum set.
2. Make sure the "Notation Style" is "Percussion" -> Settings -> Drum Set -> Edit.
3. Select the erratic instrument (e.g. Hi-Hat Closed) -> remove ("-" button at bottom left).
4. Add ("+" button at bottom left) -> from "Note Type" drop-down menu, point to "Cymbals" -> Hi-Hat -> Hi-Hat Closed.
5. Select staff position to 11, with an x notehead -> OK -> Select.
