How do I completely eliminate the tremolo for a violin
on playback? I'm on a Mac using 2002.

I'm thinking I select the passage using the MIDI tool, set
the continuous data channel to ???, then set its value to a
value that either prevents it from kicking in, or has an
amplitude of 0, but I'm stuck.

I doubt I have to create a new instrument. I'm thinking I
need to find the channel that's used to trigger the tremolo
after a certain amount of time and simply bump it up high
enough that it doesn't play for the time the note is being
held.

Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

Are you sure you want to effect tremolo? or are you talking about vibrato?
I'm not sure about 02, but in 07 and 08 you can alter the way tremolo is played back in the HP preferences (which is inside the playback settings window).

But based on what you've said here I have the distinct impression you're talking about vibrato, for which I have no idea how to alter.

Tremolo is volume fluctuation, vibrato is pitch fluctuation. There's a third term
(I can't remember what it's called) when both pitch and volume are fluctuating,
but that's not important here.

If a violin note is held for a short duration, its pitch and volume are more or
less constant. If it's held for a long(er) duration, MIDI or QuickTime or my
OS or something gives it a vibrato or tremolo--which I want to control
so that it gets removed completely for sustained notes. Something has to
be telling it how long to go before the fluctuation starts, how severe the
fluctuation is, and what the frequency of the fluctuation is--all those values
have to be known and transmitted ahead of time, but again, I don't know
enough about MIDI to know where it's stored.

Trouble is, I can't figure out if it's MIDI that's doing it, or QT, or OS X, or
whatever it is that's doing it, nor can I begin to guess where I need to
start poking to get it by the horns to tame it.

Tremolo is the rapid repetition of a note or alternation between several notes (on a violin it's bowing back and forth quickly in effect playing 32nd notes or faster (usually...there is metered and unmetered tremolo)), this can give the volume type effect you're discussing to a degree, but it has a very distinct sound, particularly on strings.

It's notated by slashes through the note stem...and it would make no sense for a virtual instrument to move into tremolo after the note has been held for some time...but this is regardless of your issue.

I am clear now that the problem isn't the way tremolo that you've notated into the score is being played back, that is all I wanted to distinguish.

Anyway, what you're talking about would be generated by the virtual instrument you are using, and may or may not be alterable depending on the software instrument. Go into the MIDI/Audio menu, and select MIDI setup, from there tell us the device listed under MIDI OUT:

That will tell us what virtual instrument Finale is playing through, with that information, you can research further into controller settings you could possibly change to remove the effect you're unhappy with...this very well may not be changeable without the purchase of a higher end software instrument.

The

BTW, I'm running Finale 2002 in classic mode on my Mac.
