First note does not playback

I have put this question in the General Forum, but it probably goes better here.

I have a piece in compound quadruple time which starts on the last quaver of the 3rd beat. There are rests in the 1st bar until the music starts so it isn't a pickup as such although if I fiddle with it Finale keeps trying to delete the rests (Why?).

I created the file (from one which used to work perfectly) by pasting each stave into a score with a different instrumentation (yes I know one can change the playback instruments but it is not a successful process in my experience - but I'll save that for another time).

The first note plays OK if I use 'Space with left click', but it does not sound if I use the playback controls. Neither does the note get played if I export a MIDI file. Weird or what?
