When I open up a default document, and try to add any measures, the resulting systems appear much further down then the previous stave. I checked the "page layout tool", and it appears that the systems are as close to each other as possible, and you cannot drag the margins any further up. In other words, when you edit the system margins, it shows that the left, right, and bottom margin are 0. I suspect this problem may have something to do with the "space for additional system", which currently reads 1.40972, but I am unsure of how to change this, assuming this is even the issue.

Help is greatly needed and appreciated, thanks!

1) Based on your description I suppose that you are using Inches as Measurement Units in Finale, right?
Layout calculations are easier, simpler, if you instead as Measurement Units select small units, e. g. Points or EVPUs.

The numbers displayed depend on what units you have selected.
In Finale 2012, under "Edit" select "Measurement Units" and make your choice.

2) Go to Document menu > Page Format > Score…
and examine the settings there.
These settings are what Finale uses when creating new systems in the document.

You can change the Page Format settings as you like.
Already existing systems / pages will not be affected.
To update already existing systems / pages with your new Page Format settings, use the command
Redefine Pages… (look in the Page Layout menu).

3) You can examine and edit system margins via the window Edit System Margins:
Page Layout Tool.
Click a system to select it,
then go to
Page Layout menu > Systems > Edit Margins…

I hope that this is clear?
If not, ask again.
