I installed a new video card (and obtained the most recent drivers for it) and am having the following problems:

1. Instrument sounds are seriously messed up, both in Finale playback and Garritan ARIA Player. In Finale the sound 'stutters', so to speak; the instrument sound is barely audible and very choppy. In ARIA player, there is no instrument sound at all, just a choppy sine wave sound.

2. Finale playback is terribly slow...many times slower than the indicated tempo.

I am using Finale 2014.5, Windows 8.1.

Many thanks!

Ken

Make sure the sample rate in finale matches the sample rate of the sound card.

Zuill, thanks for your reply.

The Finale sample rate was at the proper level...still having the problem.

Thanks,

Ken

I have been working with various combinations with the sample rate/bit depth in the Speaker Properties window on my computer and the Buffer Size on the Audio Setup window in Finale. Twice I was able to fix the issue but after rebooting my computer the problem returned.

Does the problem persist in other apps that play audio - DAWs, media players, etc?

No, audio is fine with all other media players, DAWs, YouTube, Spotify, etc. I only have issues with Finale playback.

If you are setting Finale the way you want it, and the settings aren't sticking, maybe your preferences files are corrupt. Have you tried recreating them?

Have you started a support ticket with MakeMusic?

Zuill

P.S.: Also, since I see from your question on the MakeMusic website (if that is you as well), the soundcard was moved to a different slot. Maybe the problem is there. Maybe you should move it back to the original slot and see if it gets back to working properly. Or, maybe there is a conflict between the new video card and the old soundcard. If you computer has a built in sound chip, try using that. I have had problems with my old SoundBlaster card. When I disabled it and used the built in card, everything worked smoothly.

The sound card is in fact a SoundBlaster card. How would I go about disabling it and use my built in card?

I actually don't think you need to disable it. It depends on how you are using it. Are you using it for the MIDI In (MIDI keyboard) and for MIDI playback?

I have resolved the issue.

I twice ran the Sound Blaster software installation .exe, first running it in ‘Modify’ mode, the second time ‘Repair’ mode. Neither worked. Finally I uninstalled the software, then reinstalled. I then had to play around with the settings in the Sound Blaster control panel. I initially made some bad choices with the settings (which affected the sound of some YouTube videos and some of my Spotify selections) but finally got everything working correctly.

Many thanks for your help, Zuill and BuonTempi. :D
