Constant crashing while using Finale
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Howdy folks,
I'm desperate for some guidance in this matter. I'm using Finale 2014 and it's crashing constantly and unpredictably. There is no regular event that triggers these crashes. Sometimes it's happening when I use a tool, sometimes it crashes when Finale is just sitting there doing nothing and I'm grabbing a glass of water. I can make it crash pretty reliably by changing my sound source from ASIO to General Midi in my sound settings, but that isn't how it usually crashes. On a side note, using DaVinci Studio crashes constantly too, which makes me think it's hardware/driver issue. However, I've been using Audacity a whole bunch and have not had a single crash. Is there a significant difference with how the programs render?
I'm running this setup:
ASRock x370 TaiChi mobo (onboard audio chip, RealTek)
AMD Ryzen 1700 stock 3.0ghz
32gb G.Skill ram
Sabrent NVME 1tb x2
Radeon R9 280 video card
I've been using all this gear for a few years, no problem. Then last fall I upgraded to Windows 10 and that's when all the problems started. I added 16gb (to bring me up to 32gb) and started using NVME hard drive. Hardware-wise, the new ram and the new hard drive are variables, and software-wise, Windows 10 is new. I've tried re-seating all my ram, both old and new, in every configuration, so I don't think it's that. I've reloaded Windows multiple times on both hard drives and set each to be the boot drive. Nothing helps. Computer has more than enough power to deal with this workload.
I've been searching for months for a solution and have been just dealing with the crashes and saving constantly, and dealing with losing 10-20% of my work at any given time. I can't find any reference to anything like this, and I'm at the end of my rope.
Has anyone else had similar problems, or notice anything I'm not? I've got crash dumps for like 6 of the last dozen or so crashes. Should I post those?
I can't keep working like this, I'm re-doing so much work. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Chris

Windows 10 wants to set the sample rate higher than Finale likes. What are the System and Finale's sample rates?

I had success changing the Windows setting to match Finale. There may be more than one place in Windows to check. It depends on your soundcard. Also, if you are linking peripherals to Finale, a match might be required there. I don't know. I use Direct Sound as ASIO is problematic for me.
