HP 5100 and Big Sur

I bought a new (used) 2019 iMac and installed Big Sur. Now my HP 5100 has lost functionality. No HP drivers or support are available. This is probably not new to many of you??

Anyway, thru Catalina, on my other iMac, the serial to USB adapter and the driver are wonky, but the setup allows me to print on "custom" paper (9.5x12.5) and I could access most (if not all) the other printer functions.

Now I cannot access those features. Using either Generic PostScript, Generic PCL, or Gutenprint fail to help.

I'll keep this post short - anybody have any hints or success stories?

Tom

Can you use Time Machine to go back and get the drivers from your old Mac?

Folks, I wish I had seen this the first 20 times I looked at Apple support:

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?vie ... cale=en_US

It seems to have corrected my problem - knock on wood!

Hi Mike - I still have the machine in the other room - that was next on my list. This update I found at Apple is pretty good, so I am going to see if it is the real solution. So far, the page orientation is correct, now I have to figure out the scaling and the cropping that is happening against my will!

Good you’ve gotten that far. Good luck on the rest!

I've had a HP 5000, which I used with a Generic PostScript PPD, as the drivers were causing some problem with the duplexing.

I now have an HP 5200, which continues to work fine with the supplied drivers.

You may need to set the defaults for the printer using the CUPS web front end. Type:

Code: Select all

cupsctl WebInterface=yes
into the Terminal. Then in a browser, go to https://localhost:631

From here you can configure the printer's defaults. (This is not an 'internet' webpage, but constructed by your computer.) Choose "Printers" in the top menubar, then select your printer. In the drop-down list marked "Administration", choose 'Set Default Options'.

Setting the default page size, behaviour for scaling, etc, can be done here.

Also, and perhaps easier, is setting Print Presets in the print menu of your chosen options.

I'm on Windows and have an HP5000, so this might not apply to you, but HP's Universal Print Driver PCL6 doesn't work for me, but the PCL5 version does.

I wish I could tell you all about how or where I found the update that I installed, but it shows up as "Driver Update 19.13" in the printer description General tab.

Still working - and working great, in fact.
