I am having the exact same problem on my Mac running OSX 10.6. when opening Finale 2010, I also had the same problem when I tried to open Finale 2009. Specifically the start up box appears on my screen and then when it says "initializing midi" it shuts down and says "unexpected error." The exact thing has happened on both finale 2009 and 2010. I currently do not have any other midi running programs on my computer or have a midi device connected to it either. Any thoughts?

I also have a mac and 2009 Finale, when I try to play, it closes w/o saving and if I click human playback preference, it closes. Very annoying.

When it crashes, post the crash logs. They're in the Library/Logs/CrashReporter folder inside your home directory. The logs often provide a great deal of insight into what's gong wrong.

...but please don't paste the entire (long!) crash log text contents into your post here.
Instead, upload the crash log file as an attachment to your post.

Have your problems with crashing been solved? If not, have you tried trashing the preferences? If that doesn't help, you can try Finale in a new user account to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, there's something installed in your [administrator] account which is causing a conflict.
