"associating file types or protocol with a program"

....in associating .mus thru finale 2010 - it can't be done; it would automatically choose another program like adobe or wordpad.

Is the file actually named "file.mus" or just "file"?

Right click on the .mus file, and choose OPEN WITH. There is a choice to BROWSE to the appropriate file. Browse to the Finale.exe file, and then click the box to ALWAYS USE THIS PROGRAM TO OPEN FILES OF THIS TYPE or whatever the exact wording is.
