One question - One request

First the request:

This is a big one to me, but perhaps not to others, depending on your workflow.

Long ago, the developers saw fit to remove the Cancel button from the 'Two Many Beats in a Measure' dialog. PLEASE, REINSTATE IT!!! This has been a long standing pet peeve of mine because without that Cancel button, the user must interact with the dialog. And often that dialogs pops up because of a mistyped command like selecting the wrong note value in Speedy Entry. Life was so much better before that "imrprovment (NOT)" because one could simply type Command-. to exit the dialog. It was fast and barely interrupted the workflow.

The question involves why Finale almost always asks to save a file. In my teaching, I am constantly opening a file and just printing it for students. But every time I close the file, Finale asks to save changes. I didn't make any changes!! Just close the damn file! What it the reasoning behind this behavior??

I'm inclined to support both of your wishes. It's a pity than no-one from MM seems to admit to looking at this users' forum.

What are your settings in
Preferences - Open
?

I suspect that you have some automatic setting selected.

On the "new" MM forum, there is a Feature Request tab that they actually monitor and (eventually) respond to.

Thinking the file has changed when it hasn't bugs me, too. I've complained, but they don't seem inclined or able to fix it. I guess they think it's minor, but I think something that encourages you to learn to ignore a warning is bad.

Peter,

Are you saying that you do not experience the behavior described by the OP? This "dirty on open" behavior has bothered me for many years, so if there is a known a fix, or you at least can confirm that you are not experiencing it such that there is hope that some combination of settings might fix it, I'd be happy to hear of it.

Try e. g. de-selecting “Automatic Update Layout” - and see whether it makes a difference.

Thanks Peter. That indeed fixes it for me. Haven't others been saying, though, that "Automatic Update Layout" should be left on for other reasons?

It begins to make sense…

Turning off Automatic Update Layout doesn't fix it for me. It seems like a bad solution anyway.

Perhaps you also have another automatic feature toggled on somewhere in the Preferences.

I tried turning of the data check or whatever they're calling it this time, to no avail. But I'm not willing to turn off Automatic Update Layout anyway.

This is not rocket science. Every other piece of software I've ever used does it right. MakeMusic has had years to fix it and apparently can't. This level of ineptness makes me really fear for Finale's future.

My experience is that printing is the fact that makes finale to save the file again.
Without printing I can open and close a file without saving it..
