Tempo changes

I have Finale 2004. I am trying to make my playback controls recognize tempo changes that I mark in my music. This would include ritards. I have my playback options all set to play recorded tempos, but it will only play at one speed. I can not find anything in the hand book included in ADOBE. Any suggestions?
