You can use Mac OS X to create the hotkey yourself, in
System Preferences > Keyboard & mouse > Keyboard shortcuts
Click the + icon in the lower left side of the pane.
My own hotkey for "Show Active Layer Only":
Shift-ctrl-Option-Command-A
When I create my own hotkeys, I always hold down all 4 modifier keys.
In that way I don't get a conflict with other hotkeys (since no other hotkeys ever use all 4 modifier keys), and I can always remember, what modifier keys to hold down.

Not a keyboard command, but a direct route: You can have the "show active layer" button permanently appear among the tools on the top of the screen. Window / Toolbars / Customize Toolbars / View Menu Toolbar , and then Window / Toolbars / View Toolbar.

you are both brilliant, except the customize toolbar thing doesn't work. Is that a Windows thing? I'm on a Mac and I can't find the commands given.
