Flat symbol changed to 'B' in Jazz font
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I've encountered an interesting problem that is stumping me. Unfortunately, it is occurring at a time when I am in the midst of doing a number of lead sheets for an upcoming concert. Hopefully, I can explain it coherently. . .
I am using Jazz text, Jazz extended text, or Jazz Cord fonts for chord suffix. Finale 2010b for Windows; Windows 7 Professional.
Whenever I input a chord containing a flat sign, it shows up as a 'B'. When I look at the chord definition dialog box and look at the symbols, all of those shown oin Jazz font have a 'B' instead of a flat sign. Example: G7B5 for a G7 with flatted 5th. I should add that the symbols listed and shown in Times Roman all are OK and show a proper flat sign.
This began suddenly last night as I was finishing up a nice little bop chart. I've reloaded libraries with no change. Things had been great for weeks, then this sudden 'glitch'.
Any ideas??
Thanks in advance!

You tell that you are using the fonts JazzText, JazzTextExtended, and JazzCord.
These 3 fonts all give you a letter 'b' glyph instead of the flat accidental glyph.
To get a flat accidental, use the font Jazz as the font for accidentals.
In a chord suffix you can add an accidental as a symbol "of its own", but you can also use the option "Prefix", and add the accidental as a prefix.
If you use the option "Prefix", Finale will use the Document Options font that has been chosen for "Chord" "Alteration".
See the attached screen shots.

I think I fluked an answer to this today (well at least on my Mac). Try Command-Shift F and it seems to change the B to a b

There is no problem, except when people use a text font for music characters, and a music font for text.

MakeMusic licenses Jazz from a 3rd party. There are issues that will likely never be fixed (one reason that Broadway Copyist exists). This, however, is not one of those issues. Use the correct font for the functions as MM intends and you'll be fine.

Opened a file that was saved in a previous version and now have this same problem for one chord. There are sharps and flats in other chords with no issue. The chord definition is E-7(b5)/A and I checked the suffix symbol definition. The symbol selection grid has a 'B' in slot 98 instead of the 'flat' symbol. Why is this happening and how do I fix it? Thanks...

Slot 98 is the slot where text fonts have lower case ‘b’.objectguru wrote: ↑Fri Sep 30, 2022 1:09 am… The symbol selection grid has a 'B' in slot 98 instead of the 'flat' symbol. Why is this happening and how do I fix it? …
Even if it looks like an uppercase ‘B’, it actually is the text font’s lowercase ‘b’ (I suppose that the text font is JazzText - right?).
While text fonts use slot 98 for lowercase ‘b’, music fonts use slot 98 for the ‘flat’ symbol (♭).
To fix for that particular chord suffix character, change the character’s font to a music font (e. g. the Jazz font).

Once I understood the issue, it was an easy fix. Thanks, Peter!
