When opening v25, doesn't it ask if you want to make that the default program? If not, it could be that you have the messages turned off. Do you have Show All Messages on in Preferences/View? That may not matter, but worth trying. Otherwise, regenerating preferences might be the way.

I have 5 versions of Finale installed (2011, 2012, 2014, 2014.5, and v25). v25 is the default program for opening .mus and .musx files. If I open any other version, it tells me that v25 is registered to open Finale files (with 2012-2014.5, there are 2 pop up windows--first for .musx files, then for .mus files). I click no and no. If I wanted to change the default program, then I could. But I don 't.

I think it has to do with how you open a file. I'm talking about opening Finale first, not clicking on a file. Try opening Finale v25 without clicking on a file and see what happens.

I posted elsewhere here about assigning a file type to Finale 2005 in Windows and getting Finale 2014.5 instead. It was not F25 I wanted, but the NirSoft utility solved the problem. Finale does something to the registry that foils Windows Explorer. If you want, I'll upload it here.

You could delete 2014.5, if you never use it? Or zip it, so that you can easily restore it if you do need it.Ronald J Brown wrote:only to have Finale 2014.5 (which I never use) spring into action.

Earlier I mentioned 2012 as connected with .musx files. That was bad memory. That started with 2014. Anyway, the pop-up happens as the program is starting up. However, if you have checked the option to not ask again, that is memorized in preferences. Checking Show all messages should restore that. Regenerating preferences would also change that, but just changing the one item is the easiest way.

P.S.: Attached is an image of what should show when opening a version of Finale that is not the default program for opening Finale files.

I suspect Ron has me filtered, but perhaps someone can pass this along to him.motet wrote:I posted elsewhere here about assigning a file type in Windows and getting Finale 2014.5 instead. Glad it worked. For me, Finale 25 was not in the picture, and I don't have such an (x86) directory, so I don't know about the Program Files theory. I suspect MM just doesn't know what they're doing.

Well, I'm baffled. The popups have been happening for me for as long as I've had more than one version of Finale on my computer. I am going to guess that possibly Ron, having been a beta tester, might have differences in the way Finale is installed on his computer. Just a hunch.

I don't think so.
Anyway, I have Program Files and Program Files (x86) on both of my Windows 7 machines (64-bit). Finale v25 is in Program Files, which I believe is for 64-bit programs. All my other Finale versions are in Program Files (x86), which I believe is for 32 -bit applications.

Before pressing reset preferences, backup the preferences files elsewhere. If resetting preferences fails to accomplish what is need, just move the file back into the proper folder and everything you saved before will be restored. I would save a good copy of the preferences files in a backup folder for just this circumstance.
I have 4 32-bit versions of Finale and v25. I am not experiencing the failure of the popup for assignment of default Finale version, so, as I suggested, your system is somehow behaving differently. I have 2 computers with multiple versions of Finale, both Windows 7, and the behavior I describe is the same on both.
