I've never used the Stem Direction tool--a relic that's not useful? There's Stem Direction on the Utilities menu if you want to affect a range. If you want to get really arcane, you can change the point at which stems flip on a per-staff basis.

Sometimes, a transposition or adding a second voice will leave stems in the wrong direction over several measures—yea, yea, yea, it's not supposed to but... I also see this after importing a file via MusicXML that was created in another application.
The Stem Direction tool is very handy for those instances.

Of course you sometimes want to flip a stem, but I guess I'm not getting why the Stem Direction tool is useful. I couldn't find it documented anywhere in the manual, but it seems you click on one measure at a time and handles appear above and below each stem; clicking on the handles one at a time makes the stems go up or down. Is there anything more to it than that? To flip a single stem, L in Simple or Speedy entry seems more convenient to me.
If you want to do more than one stem at a time, the Stem Direction tool seems useless for that--there's Utilities/Stem Direction instead. How would a macro be better?
So it seems like perhaps the Stem Direction tool is a relic from the early days of Finale, perhaps before L worked in note entry. But if I'm not getting the power of the Stem Direction tool, I'd like to know about that. Using handles to accomplish the flip seems odd--it would be better to just click on a note and have it flip. I was able to select more then one handle but then didn't see a way to apply some function to the selected handles.

I just find Simple entry anything but simple: you click in the measure and all the notation moves--a neurological insult. And if the note is on a bottom ledger line, you must labor to scroll down, hoping to line up with the note that does not appear in the box until the non-WYSIWYG feature shows it. Then you need to be ultra-precise in placing the cursor on the note, otherwise things get messy.
Clicking on a stem flip handle takes a fraction of a second and work flows smoothly. But maybe I'm overlooking something.

I'm not sure what you're referring to about the notation changing, but you might profit from doing the Finale tutorials, especially if you want to enter music!Djard wrote:I just find Simple entry anything but simple: you click in the measure and all the notation moves--a neurological insult.
The Stem Direction Tool is very useful in cross-staff notation, otherwise not.motet wrote:So it seems like perhaps the Stem Direction tool is a relic from the early days of Finale, perhaps before L worked in note entry. Attached is an example of using Speedy Entry v2012 for editing notation. The non-aligning (non-WYSIWYG) view to me is annoying, so I use Speedy only for dragging notes and rests vertically in an edit. For horizontal change in placement of notation, the Note Position Tool is kinder on the eyes and just as efficient if not moreso. But I think Finale is still a wonderful program.

Above, it was Simple entry, not Speedy, which you described as a neurological insult. Simple doesn't have an edit frame like that. Speedy seems to shrink the edit frame as you've illustrated if you're zoomed way, way in. I never see it in my usage.
Skjalg, please say more about cross-staff use if you can.

Take a look at
Speedy menu > Speedy Options…
What are your settings in the pane Speedy Frame scaling?
* Scale to Staff - or Fixed Scaling?
* In the case of Scale to Staff, do you have a Minimum Percentage, or a Maximum Percentage, or both?

Thanks for responding. I'm using the default settings as follows:
Scale to staff
~~Minimum percentage: Yes, 50
~~Maximum percerntager: Yes, 150
Use fixed scaling of: No
Fill with rests at end of measure: Yes
Auto-launch frame: Yes
Use MIDI device for input: Yes
Use MIDI Modifier keys...: No
MIDI Modifier Assignments: <None>

I suggest that you try de-selecting Minimum Percentage and Maximum Percentage.

You meant Speedy entry, of course. You might like Simple entry instead, which doesn't have an edit frame or that ledger line issue.Djard wrote:I just find Simple entry anything but simple: you click in the measure and all the notation moves--a neurological insult.
