Is there some way that Finale visually distinguishes between files made with 2014.5 and 25? They both still have the suffix .musx, so there is no way to tell from that.
I have in the last day lost a fair amount of work because I believe that I have opened and am editing a file in Finale 25, and then when I try to save it, I get the attached message. At the very least, it's crazy making, though I don't doubt I am just doing something wrong.
For the moment, I am just going to stick with using 2014.5, since I am not losing anything when I do.

That may have been true, but I made sure to quit 2014.5 and take it off my dock, and then when I'd reopen the files, they'd automatically open with 2014.15. In the past, a new version would always supersede the older one, but that seems not to be the case here.
My earlier question remains: how can you tell if a file is saved in 2014.5 or in 25?
Thanks,
Mark

You should be able to open it in 25 and either it will tell you it was created with an earlier version, or you can look in the document properties, where it shows which version of Finale created it.
I'm not sure why the .musx files aren't opening in 25. Perhaps it wasn't installed correctly. Maybe mikehalloran will know.

More than one issue here but they're all related. This is something that all Mac users need to know as all apps and files work this way.mark carlson wrote:That may have been true, but I made sure to quit 2014.5 and take it off my dock, and then when I'd reopen the files, they'd automatically open with 2014.15. Find a .musx file. Right-click (or however you do it) to have Get Info pop up. This will tell you which app is going to open a file (default) — you may have to click on the Open With triangle to see the app. See the first screen shot.
Now you can change the app that opens that file—see my 2nd screen shot.
If you want to have that app open all .musx files, click on the Change All button and agree to the popup.

Got it. Thanks! All of a sudden my PDFs started opening with Adobe, which I didn't want, so I learned this same trick in regards to reverting to have them open with Preview.

Yep! Adobe tries to trick you into that on installation and that's the fix. Pages wants to open Word files and so on...mark carlson wrote:Got it. Thanks!
