What causes staff styles to sometimes clone themselves so one winds up with several identical ones with the same name? I am not importing libraries or copying in music from other files.

I’ve noticed this as well. I’m not at the computer right now so I can’t check this but does this still happen if the staff style is set to non-copyable?

That does seem to prevent it! I always set the copy filter to not copy staff styles, though, so it's some odd side-effect. I guess I can just uncheck that for my staff styles.

But all the MM-defined staff styles are copyable, and it doesn't happen with them. I confess to being confused about this option, and I vaguely remember a bug being discussed in the old forums related to it. Perhaps Zuill remembers. If anyone can enlighten me as to what the practical intent of having the option one way or the other is, I'd appreciate it.

Copyable does not mean duplicable. Copyable means that when it is applied to a measure, and the measure is copied, the staff style gets pasted to the destination measure. There is a bug there in that this does not happen properly in parts. oOne has to go back into the score and then choose to apply the style in those measures to the part as well.

Anyway, creating a duplicate in the list is something I've not encountered.

Thanks. I guess I'll report it.

Looks like it's related to the staff style redefining the staff name and being copyable. (I use staff styles for Bb to A clarinet, for example.)

Here's a demo file.

Okay. Only Staff Styles with a Staff Name defined show this behavior.

I checked back as far as I have installed (Finale 2011), and the same behavior occurs. So, it looks like it has been around for a while, and probably long before 2011.

But not 2005! Perhaps it appeared when copying was switched to the selection tool. Thanks for checking.

If you happen to use two identical ones, then it's some work to get rid of the duplicate, because there's no "Delete and replace in the score with..."

I heard back from MM on this. Apparently it only happens on Windows.

Of course. They have to spread the bugs around. Mac users can't have all the bugs!
