I am still having problems with tuplets.
Here is what I need in a single measure:
2 quarter note triplets; the first is quarter/quarter/ eighth/eighth
the 2nd is Half/eighth/eighth

I am stumped because finale will let me key in the first but when I try to do the 2nd I end up with 16th rest.

Occasionally, some input methods yield undesirable results. Please let us know the method being used that gives that result.

No problem, here. As Zuill says, we need to know how you are inputting the notes. Please give us the step-by-step you are using.

I've found that if you're inputting mixed tuplets like this in Simple entry, it's best to delete the rests that Simple creates after you use the 9 key, then enter the remaining notes. It's a little buggy if you try to replace a quarter rest with an eighth note, for example.

Even if you delete the last rest, entering an 8th on the last half beat triggers the bug if you use a qwerty key (letter), for example. If you click with the mouse, however, the bug is bypassed.

I'm able to enter both tuplets without a hitch using just the qwerty keyboard.

The trick (in Widows) is on the second tuplet to enter a half note first then type alt 9 and select 3 quarters in the space of 2 quarters in the dialog box. Then enter the two eighths.

I started to type a step-by-step previously, but realized the op is using a mac and I don't know the key strokes for that OS.

Correct you are. I guess I was trying Motet's suggestion and that is what created the problem. NOT deleting the quarters rest yields the proper result.

I'm beginning the tuplet just as you say, but if I then press 4 on the keypad (eighth notes) and type a letter A-G, it enters a quarter note. What am I doing differently? (i'm a very occasional Simple user.)

Ah, I see: leave the cursor before the rest. The whole Simple Entry concept is somewhat mysterious, but I'm beginning to see the light.

Perhaps I'm wrong that (at least sometimes) the rests need to be deleted. That was my conclusion in the past, but I may well have been flailing around.

That quarter rest appears to be selected. It should not be. After entering the half note, and tapping 9 to set up the triplet, immediately upon returning to the score, tap the 4 for the eighth note, and then, the letter key.

Occasionally, when entering mixed tuplets, there may be a superfluous rest left over, and that should be deleted. Otherwise, no, not necessary.

In most cases, if Windows uses the Alt key, Mac uses the Option.
