Seems like I spend hour after hour trying to solve things that seem like they should have very simple obvious solutions!
There, now that I've vented... I just want to get playback of string parts (same idea would apply to horn parts) that are legato; just as if the violinist just keeps his/her bow moving, and just moves his/her fingers. Example is attached. I've tried switching between VST and MIDI, normal GM "Strings" vs. "Slow Strings", adding a slur, changing key velocities, changing note durations. I get slight changes in the playback, but never a nice even legato sound. Sometimes the first note has a strong attack and very quick decay. And there is an unwanted volume increase as the other notes play. Thanks for any help!
legato strings??

If adding a slur doesn't work, try using the MIDI Tool to add to the stop time of each note that you want to connect to the next. I tried adding 300. See what works for you.

I just saw what you posted today so I downloaded your example and did a little checking. For one thing, you're never going to get a decent string sound using soft synths. If you switch to the built-in Garritan sounds, the strings will sound much better. That said, as Zuill mentioned, adding a slur will smooth things out quite a bit, which I did. I've included two audio links to what I came up with for your examples. The first example is with Garritan strings. The second is from the EastWest Orchestral library which I use almost exclusively.

Thanks! I think just switching to Garritan will do the trick for my purposes. I can't hear a big difference with also adding slurs, and don't know if I would need the delayed note endings. I'm not sure why I had been avoiding using Garritan.
