Is there a way to tell Finale to play back an entire region of notes "slightly staccato"? Without having to mark each note?

Thank you.

That would have to be a Human Playback operation, and I am pretty sure that HP doesn't do that. You're probably going to need to put the staccato dots and then hide them. That should trigger the playback you need. Or, do it with the MIDI Tool. That method allows the precise amount of staccato. By the way, you can create a blank articulation with a staccato affect as well, so you have options.

I've done this kind of alteration the way Zuill describes. Also, if I want the staccato articulation to appear, I've duplicated it and then redefined its playback. I've set the duration to 40%, 60%, and 75% of note values, depending on the effect I want. The default staccato duration value is 50%. If you do this, remember to change both the top and lower note values. If you want to redefine the staccato duration for all the notes in the piece, then don't duplicate it--just redefine the original symbol.

I don't often hide staccato articulations, or any other ones, because Finale behaves as if it's still there--for example, in slur placement, the slur thinks the articulation is still there, so its placement looks "off" (too high when the slur is above the note and too low when it's below the note). Instead, as Zuill suggests, I use the MIDI tool to adjust the note duration. In fact, for phrasing purposes, I've created FinaleScripts for various note duration percentages to speed this process.

OK, I see how to do articulation designing. Thanks!

I'll take a look at doing it via the Midi tool; I've only tried via articulations so far. I do have quite a bit of music though... Gogreen, I'd be interested in having a look at one of the FinaleScripts you've created, if you want to share, it's easy to send, and you still have any around. Send to me privately if you like.

In any case, thank you both for the help.

Attached is a screenshot of my FinaleScript for altering note duration by 90%. I use this one mostly for phrasing. Note that I'm on Mac. Almost a year ago I went from a Windows environment to Mac OS X, so the syntax is slightly different in Windows. First, select the note or notes. Here's my old Windows 10 script for 90% note duration:

Menu Item "Tools/Advanced Tools/Midi"
Menu Item "MIDI Tool/Edit Note Durations"
Menu Item "clear"
Menu Item "MIDI Tool/Percent Alter..."
type 90 near "Make all Durations"
button ok

You might have to experiment a bit to get it to work. When you do get it to work, you can change the percentage number in the next-to-last line for different note durations. I most often use 95%, 90%, 85%, 80%, 75%, and 70%. Keyboard shortcuts make the task faster. My using these alterations depends on tempo and the effect I want to create.
