I've got "Technique Text" trouble.

In the attached fragment, the "8vb" is not working, i.e., it has no effect at all on playback on my machine.

If I try to do the 8vb in a brand-new file containing the same material, then it does work OK. Unfortunately, I really need it to get it working within the large existing file. Deleting and re-inserting the marking doesn't help.

Any ideas?

I'm running Finale 2014.5, on 32-bit Windows

thanks,
Garry

PS - I just had to post the file in .MUS format rather than .MUSX -- I got a "file too big" error. The discussion appears to be the same though.

Deleting it and reapplying worked for me, using MIDI playback (VST didn't work on my system). But the next time I played it, everything was an octave lower and it didn't drop a further octave at the mark. Such are the mysteries of Human Playback. A "loco" set it right again.

Try using the "8" smart line below the staff. That will better show the extent of the 8vb. Even if it's one note.

I think the playback issues in this file has to do with an odd VST setup. For a short 2 bar example, it seems to be a strange way of doing things. This might have contributed to the playback woes. Each layer is assigned to a different VST Bank. That is totally unnecessary.

What am I doing wrong? I cannot get the 8vb to show, no matter what I do. Dragging below the staff has no effect. Playback, however, is correct.

It's a Smart Line setting.

Someone will be along shortly to say that 8vb is incorrect. 8va below the staff means an octave below, so yours is not wrong.

I know that it is, but sometimes, it's easier to comply than to ejjicate.

I don't agree that it's incorrect. It's a back formation, sure, but it's in widespread use.

Back home from Christmas. I've done a work-around: I found an instance where I had an 8vb that was working, but not really needed. So I dragged that 8vb to the spot where I was having the trouble and dropped it there, and it continued to work. Then I went back and patched the spot it came from. Problem resolved... for now.

My thanks to you all for your thoughts and help.

(Note: pardon my "vb" placement style: the vb's are in a Layer that will be rarely actually seen; they're there just to control playback. As for having all those different playback Banks... they were accidentally included in the file I sent. I keep them all separate just so that I never need to actually think about banks. No harm?)
