Is there any way to position group names on a per-system basis?
I have a group of three clarinets. Most of the time clarinet 3 is on bass, so I position the group name 'Cl.' midway between clarinets 1 and 2, which is fine. But when clarinet 3 switches to regular clarinet I want the group name in the middle of the group, i.e., next to the number 2. But I can't, easily.
This can also be a problem even where there's no doubling involved: I also have a group of three trumpets, with the group name 'Tpt.' centred next to the 2. But if on any given system the spacing between the staves is uneven (maybe just tpt.2 needs extra space for a muting instruction, for example), the group name is then slightly out, which looks really crap.
The only way I can find to deal with this is to set up separate groups to cover limited measure ranges, with different name positions, but this seems incredibly clumsy. Is there no other way to position these damn things on a per-system basis?
I'm a long time, albeit very intermittent, Finale user and I don't remember running into this problem in the past. Is this another thing they've 'improved', like the inability to move a staff higher than the one above it? (This gives problems when flute 3 doubles on piccolo, for example — you want the piccolo at the top.)

The feature you need that is missing now is "optimization", which was removed in Finale 2011. You can still do what you want, but in a little different manner.
See the attached file. Change the staff names for clarinets 1-3 to just "1, 2, 3" in the Score Manager–uncheck "auto numbering style" for all 3 staves. Double click on the Bb Clarinet group (the wire bracket) and add the full and abbreviated group names. When you hide the clarinet 3 stave with the Staff Tool, the group name will readjust position.
One other thing–when you want to make parts, the part names for the 3 clarinets will be 1, 2, and 3. You'll have to edit the part definition name in the Manage Parts window to read "Bb Clarinet 1", etc.

With respect, N Grossingink, I don't think you've taken in what my question was. I've already done exactly what you suggest in the way of naming parts and groups. The problem arises when one of a group doubles on a different instrument, eg bass clarinet, cor anglais...

Yep - looks like that's the only way. I'd better bite the bullet and get on with it - it's a big score!

Well I've done it, and it took me an entire day of intensive work - I'm half blind now!
This is going to be a feature request (as if it'll do any good...)
