Hi

I’m hoping for some advice. I purchased Allegro 2000 second hand from eBay and it has arrived with 2 discs inside. Allegro 2000, with all the paperwork and codes, but also ‘Allegro 2005’ disc, with no paperwork. I bought this as a gift for someone so don’t know how to use it myself, but am I right in thinking I can give them the 2005 version and it will work fine? Or will it need the original paperwork/codes etc that it came with?

Excuse my ignorance but if the 2005 version is better I’d like to give him this one, especially if it’s worth more! Also, if I did this I’m hoping I could resell the 2000 version and perhaps even get my money back!

Thanks in advance

You will need the serial number. If you only have it for the 2000 version, that’s what you will have to use.

Having said that, it is a 20 year old program, that has been discontinued for 10, so it probably won’t run on a modern operating system. Certainly not on a Mac, and I’m not sure about Windows. Nor will you get any support from Finale. Even most members of the forum don’t go back that far, although there are some who may be able to help. I sure hope you didn’t pay much for it.

It might run on Windows. I still have Finale 2005 on Windows 10.

The serial number might be the same for Allegro 2000 and Allegro 2005, if the latter was n upgrade. I've always had the same serial number for Finale.

Thank you for your replies. It’s for windows and I didn’t pay a lot for it (I don’t think) in comparison to newer versions, but was told it should work on the computer it’s intended for. So perhaps whoever sold it had upgraded from 2000 to 2005 and that’s why they only had the disc for the 2005 version? I think I’ll just give him both and tell him to try the newer one if this is the case :)

Is it still the case that you can buy an upgrade to the newer systems if you have one of the older ones? For a lesser price than retail? Or is this version too old for that?

According to this page

https://store.makemusic.com/Store/

you can upgrade to Finale from Allegro for $200. That is a good price.

Thanks. It says you can upgrade from a previous version of Finale for $149. The discs I have both say Finale, so perhaps it could be done for 149? I’ll suggest it when I give the disc :)
