I'm hoping I didn't ask this back in 2009 when I wrote this piece! I am just revising it. It is for SATB in short score. I cannot get the semibreve (full bar) rest to appear in the soprano part when both layers are visible. I know Finale will happily put a 4 beat rest in triple time if there is a bar of rest so it must be to do with the layers. If I look at the active layer only the rest is there. (See images)
I'm sure it is an easy fix but I am stumped. (Back in 2009 I worked around this by making this bar 4/4 and hiding the unwanted notes/beats/ Of course is affected the playback but visually it worked. I'd like to be more honest now.)
Rest not appearing

You have to put a "real" whole rest in the other layer.
Probably easiest to do it with the mouse from the Simple Entry rest palette. Uncheck the Simple Entry option "Check for extra notes."

I actually knew that I needed to insert a 'real' rest but I didn't know about the second part of your answer which was exactly what I needed! Thank you.motet wrote:You have to put a "real" whole rest in the other layer... Uncheck the Simple Entry option "Check for extra notes."
