I'm trying to do 12 continuous sixteenth notes without them being broken up into three groups of four notes. They need to all be connected. I am trying to write a cadenza and having absolutely no luck with this at all. Finale Customer Support doesn't even know how to do it.

Apparently the only way to write a cadenza in Finale is to count the total number of beats (like 64/4) and use that as the time signature. It gets very, very messed up if you try to do that.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

The better we understand, the better we can help.

Without knowing the exact layout you need to create, we can only give general advice.

Are you using the Speedy Entry Tool, or the Simple Entry Tool?
Both entry tools can join beams (and they both have a keyboard shortcut for joining beams).

In the Simple Entry Tool:
Select the note after the beam break.
Simple menu > Simple Edit Commands > Modify Entry > Break/Join Beam

In the Speedy Entry Tool:
Position the crosshair on the note after the beam break.
Speedy menu > Speedy Edit Commands > Break/Join Beam

There are other ways to create a cadenza than “count the total number of beats (like 64/4) and use that as the time signature”.
Could you perhaps give us some clues about the actual score layout?
Is it a solo piece? (only one instrument)
or orchestra with solo?
or?

That worked! Thanks!

* It is violin/piano score. I'm trying to write the violin part.

Amazing that nobody from tech support could answer this question for me.

I find that statement VERY hard to believe, especially when one considers that looking up "cadenza" in Finale's help immediately brings up two different methods to achieve the effect.

More than likely you dd not express your requirements correctly, or in a manner that allowed the support team to answer to your satisfaction.

Do you need 16th notes that still add up to the normal beat count of the measure?
Do you need more notes than would normally fill the measure?
Is there anything going on in another staff at the same time?

These are all considerations as to which method will give you the best result.

Position Notes Evenly Across Measure is my preference, often, for cadenzas. It is an option at the bottom of the Measure Attributes box.

I've never written a cadenza, but isn't there a JW plug-in that combines many bars into one and thus saves you from having to count up quarter notes in such a bar?

There is a JW Plugin: JW Meter and Rhythm, v1.14

Here's a video from Jari showing how you can create cadenzas with it:

Believe whatever you want to. I asked the question the same way and all they gave me was an answer that was incorrect. I'm glad I goto the correct one.

Did you get that technique from the Make Music folks? If so, you received the correct answer. I've never had it get "messed up".
